The Importance of Law Day in 2021

Have you ever heard of Law Day? Perhaps not, as May 1 marks several celebrational days – May DaySchool Principals’ Day, and National Space Day. And while Law Day may not garner as much enthusiasm and attention as other holidays, there is reason for Americans to tune in and acknowledge the significance of this day, as it comes at a time when recognizing the value of law has never been more relevant.

Each Law Day possesses a specific theme, and this year’s theme is the rule of law, which the American Bar Association (ABA) defines as a “set of principles, or ideals, for ensuring an orderly and just society. Many countries throughout the world strive to uphold the rule of law where no one is above the law, everyone is treated equally under the law, everyone is held accountable to the same laws, there are clear and fair processes for enforcing laws, there is an independent judiciary, and human rights are guaranteed for all.”

The notion that everyone deserves equal treatment under the law reminds us what America was founded on, and in 2021, that belief and strong value is more significant that ever.

The demand for legal services has skyrocketed.

Coming out of COVID-19 and continuing to face the repercussions of it, Americans desperately need the help and support of legal services. From unemployment issues to housing matters like evictions, small business owners, individuals and families all over the country are still fighting to stay above waters.

Where do you turn when you need legal help but can’t afford the hourly rates? Well, many have turned to legal aid organizations, which help low-income Americans handle legal matters like employment, domestic violence, eviction or medical debt.

Unfortunately, though, with an overwhelming amount of people needing these services, not everyone is getting what they need, and legal aid groups are scrambling.

Legal aid services are reaching their breaking point.

The Legal Aid Society of Hawaii, for example, saw such a great demand for their help that they've now reached their breaking point. Since they have not received additional funding from the government, they are struggling to cover their own finances.

Instead of adding attorneys to the groups to adapt to the growing need of legal representation, these organizations are barely filling budget gaps and working tirelessly to prevent staff cuts.

Meanwhile, more and more Americans are falling below the poverty lines and, on top of the difficulties receiving the help they need in the first place, representation from the legal aid organizations is not guaranteed in civil cases like debt and consumer issues. So, they need help to get back on their feet and handle difficult legal issues.
